School of Medicine Reaches New Fundraising Milestone

Originally published on the School of Medicine's website

One of the School of Medicine’s signature events of the year, the annual Black Tie/White Coat Gala, reached a major fundraising milestone in 2013.

The March 8 event, held at 701 Whaley Street, attracted more than 400 people and raised more than $60,000 in support of the School of Medicine Alumni Scholarship Fund and The Free Medical Clinic in Columbia. This year’s efforts helped push the 12-year fundraising total for the event to more than $500,000.

“The School of Medicine is appreciative of the incredible support our alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends have shown the gala over the years,” said Richard Hoppmann, M.D., dean of the USC School of Medicine. “It is a wonderful event that makes a meaningful impact on the community and our students.”

The Black Tie/White Coat Gala was started in 2002 by fourth-year medical students at the School of Medicine with the hope of creating an annual tradition to benefit both the school and the greater Columbia community.
Each year, 40 to 50 medical students volunteer to organize the annual gala. Many students spend months planning the event and collecting auction items from local businesses. The reward for their hard work is an evening of entertainment and fun while supporting two worthwhile causes.

The School of Medicine thanks the many supporters who have made the Black Tie/White Coat Gala a tremendous success.
