State License Tag Honors Gamecock Baseball Program

Back-to-Back Championship PlateOriginally posted on February 13, 2013

My Carolina Alumni Association, in conjunction with the University of South Carolina Department of Athletics, has announced a new opportunity for alumni and fans to show their school pride by purchasing a state license tag honoring the Gamecock baseball team’s back-to-back national championships in 2010 and 2011. Legislation authored by Representatives Michael A. Pitts, District 14, and Garry R. Smith, District 27, who are both alumni of the university, was approved by the state legislature last year.

Proceeds from the purchase of the license tags goes directly to scholarships at the university. The tags are available for purchase from the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles beginning Tuesday, February 19, 2013.

“This is a great way for alumni and fans to not only show their support for the Gamecocks, but also to help build support for the university and its students in a meaningful way,” said Jack Claypoole, My Carolina executive director. “On behalf of My Carolina and its nearly 270,000 living alumni, we feel this is a super way to honor the success of our Gamecock baseball program while also giving back to the university. By supporting student scholarships, purchase of this tag helps support young people who want to come to Carolina for a world-class education while watching national-championship athletics."

“We appreciate the efforts of Representative Smith and Representative Pitts in supporting the university through this legislation," he continued, "and are thankful for the work of Ray Tanner, Chad Holbrook, and their staff and players for giving Gamecock nation a continued sense of pride in the university with their team’s accomplishments.”

Anyone interested in purchasing the “Back-to-Back National Champions” South Carolina license tag may do so at their local DMV office or www.scdmvonline.com. More information is also available at www.MyCarolina.org/champsplate. The cost of the tag is a $70 specialty-plate fee in addition to the regular registration fee and is payable every two years.

A specialty tag supporting the University of South Carolina is not unprecedented. In 1991, in an effort to support the Alumni Association’s scholarship initiatives, the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles began offering Carolina alumni and supporters the chance to purchase official university license plates bearing the Carolina athletics logo and featuring a garnet-and-black color scheme. Proceeds from the purchase of those license tags were also designated by law to go toward academic scholarships at the university.

Additional information about the new license tag can be found on My Carolina’s web site at www.MyCarolina.org/champsplate.
