Dear Carolina Family:
When one member of our family is harmed, we are all harmed. I am outraged that our campus has fallen victim to senseless violence and I assure each of you that I will do all that I can to continue to make this campus safe for students, faculty and staff.
This week, six new police officers are being integrated into the USC police force with additional hires coming. We will invest additional resources in technology and other tools that may deter those determined to harm our community. Of course, we will continue our crime suppression efforts with cameras and call boxes while providing increased opportunities for the Carolina community to access late night shuttles and escorts.
Today, I will speak with Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, and we have already spoken with the city’s police department leadership to step-up our ongoing collaborations with the city. This afternoon, I am also convening our University Safety Committee to further discuss ways to keep our campus and community safe.
As we continue to actively pursue all avenues to protect our students, faculty, staff and visitors, I ask each of you to be alert, to look out for each other and to report anything that appears inappropriate or suspicious. Together, we must stand up for Carolina.
Sincerely,
Harris Pastides
President, University of South Carolina
