Take Your Career to the Next Level

Are you happy where you are in your professional life, or do you feel like you have some room to grow?  I think most of us can agree that we never really feel like we have reached perfection in our professional lives.  We all have career goals, and navigating the professional world is just one part of the journey to reaching those goals.  Here are my top tips for professional development to kick off 2020 and your journey to success:

1. Never stop being a student

The second you stop learning is the second you stop growing.  Take every opportunity you can to attend a continuing education class, read books and articles related to your industry, and find a mentor you look up to.  Knowledge is power and confidence and can take you the next level.

2. Join a professional networking group

Have you ever heard the saying “Who you spend time with the most is who you will become”?  Make a solid investment in spending time with like minded people who have similar professional goals by joining a networking group.  With that said, some networking groups just end up being social clubs.  Do your research and invest your time wisely with a group that is intentional about staying focused, positive, and leaves you feeling motivated!

3. Be loud with your goals

You have thought about your goals for this year, but are you writing them down? Speaking them out loud? Sharing them with your family, friends, and colleagues?  When you write them down, make sure to put them somewhere you can see them frequently.  Ask those you share your goals with to check in with you.  It makes you accountable and keeps you focused on what you are trying to achieve.

4. Delegate

There are only 24 hours in a day, and experts say 8 of those should be spent sleeping. While some of us might daydream about getting 8 hours of sleep a night, we can make sure to spend our time awake in the most efficient way possible by delegating tasks.  Find the items on your to do list that you can hand off to someone else and do just that.  Delegating is a great way to manage your time.

5. Give your brain a break from work

Burning out is a real thing.  Be intentional about turning off your work brain and giving it a rest.  Spend time with family and friends, find hobbies you enjoy, or just put on your stretch pants and binge watch your favorite tv show.  You will be refreshed and ready when its time to get back to the grind.
